If you haven’t yet heard of Cruces Creatives yet, you should take note! This crafting titan of an organization is building a collection of tools and a wealth of knowledge unlike any in the area.
Cruces Creatives is a Makerspace 2.0, as co-founder Lea Wise-Surguy dubs it. “We take creativity to as broad as we can possibly argue it.”
For the organization, it has been an exciting experience. The group has been able to provide low income creatives with the means to reach goals in their projects and craft things they would have otherwise never had the tools to do. They strive hard to provide equal access to anyone in the community by even offering memberships on a volunteer basis. If you are willing to volunteer 12 hours a month, 3 hours a week, you too can have access to this crafters gym!
The space is a community fueled project. Many of the machines and pieces of equipment have been donated to the organization, and they benefit from donations from the community to help keep the space so affordable to the makers.
Cruces Creatives has been the home of many inspirational projects, from middle schoolers helping build a car for a disabled girl named Hope, to a young woman building dog houses to make a living for herself.
This is a place that fosters connections, by providing a space for like minded folks to come together and create together. They also provide a network of volunteer specialists that can provide help with community projects and even teach in the local schools, helping teachers in the district explain complex topics with an expert opinion.
Velo Cruces and Charitable Crafting are both organizations that share the space to help provide services to the community. Velo Cruces hosts workshops and store hours to help the community learn about bike repair, while also providing bikes to those in need. Charitable Crafting provides textile goods, using the sewing room to make garments for the quarterly charity of the groups choosing. It’s a place to provide a great service to the community, while also taking advantage of the great library of assets available to you.
